Sir Elton John has said he is “in shock” at the death of his mother, just months after the pair rekindled their relationship having not spoken to each other for almost nine years.

The star announced that Sheila Farebrother had died aged 92 on Monday morning, describing how he would “miss you so much”.

It was only in May that Sir Elton disclosed that he and his mother were “back in touch” following his brush with death that saw him put in intensive care with a bacterial infection he contracted in South America.

Posting a picture of the pair on Instagram, Sir Elton wrote: “So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning.

“I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank-you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton.”

Before they got back in touch with each other, Sir Elton had not spoken to his mother since June 2008.

The legendary singer and his mother had recently reconciled after a falling out.

“Out of respect for my mother’s privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship,” John told London’s Mirror in 2016. “However, I can say that we are now back in touch and have been so since my mother’s 90th birthday.”

This past Mother’s Day, he tweeted a photo posing with her that was captioned, “Dear Mum, Happy Mother’s Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton xo #MothersDay”
